Backbiting In the Light of Qur'an and Hadith

Backbiting In the Light of Qur'an and Hadith

Arabic Transliteration:

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo ijtaniboo katheeran mina alththanni inna baAAda alththanni ithmun wala tajassasoo wala yaghtab baAAdukum baAAdan ayuhibbu ahadukum an yakula lahma akheehi maytan fakarihtumoohu waittaqoo Allaha inna Allaha tawwabun raheemun.

English Translation( Yusuf Ali):

O ye who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin:And spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, ye would abhor it...(so abhore the backbiting) But fear Allah.

For Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.

Urdu Translation (transliteration) :

Aae imaan walon! Shak aur shubhaat se jiss qadar mumkin ho bacho; kiyonke shubhaat kuch halaton mein gunaah hote hain: aur ek doosre ki jasoosi unnke peeth peeche na kiya karo.Kiya tum mein se koyee apne murdah bhai ka ghost khana pasand karega?

Bilkul nahi, tum sub intehayi na-pasand karo ge (iss liye Gheebat ko bhi intihaayi na-pasand karo) aur Allah se daro, Allah 'Tauba qubool karne waale' aur 'Rahem karne waale' hain.

Hadith

Anas (RadiAllahu anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa'sallam) said,

"When I was ascended to heaven, I passed by a people who had copper nails with which they scratched their faces and chests, and I said, "O Jibreel, who are these?'

He said,

"These are those who used to eat other people's flesh and attack their honour." (Aboo Dawood)

Urdu Translation (Transliteration)

Anas (RadiAllahu anhu) ne riwayat kiya ke Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wa'sallam) ne farmaaya:

"Jab main Jannat mein utaara gaya to main aaise logon ke paas se guzra jin ke paas taambe ke naakhun the jiss se unhon ne apne chehre aur seene ko kharonch rakha tha.

Main ne Jibra'il (Aleihissalaam) se daryaft kiya: "O! Jibra'il! yeh kaun log hain? "

Unhon ne farmaaya:

"Yeh woh log hain jo doosre logon ka ghost khaya karte the aur unnki izzat wa namoos pe hamla aawar hote the." (Aboo Dawood)

Difference between 'Slandering' and 'Backbiting'

Aboo Hurayrah (RadiAllahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa'sallam) said,

"Do you know what backbiting is?"

They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."

He (Sallallahu alaihi wa'sallam) then said,

"It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike."

Someone asked him, "But what if what I say is true?"

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa'sallam) said,

"If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him,but if it is not true then you have slandered him." (Muslim)
