Tikal, Guatemala

Tikal is a Mayan town-state. It is one of the largest preserved ruins of this pre-Columbian civilization. It is easily accessible from Belize. The citadel is in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. It dates back possibly to the 1st century A.D. The city was later abandoned after 850 A.D. The iconic ruins include the Lost World Pyramid and the Temple of the Grand Jaguar.
